Stagehand review
A flexible, AI-native SDK for browser workflows with narrower platform coverage.

Stagehand is an open-source browser automation SDK for developers building browser agents and web automations. It combines Playwright-style browser APIs with natural-language primitives for acting, observing, extracting structured data, and running multi-step agent workflows. The project is suited to teams that want programmatic browser control alongside adaptation to changing web pages, with SDKs for TypeScript, Python, and Go. It supports API and self-hosted deployment models, and can run browsers locally or through Browserbase cloud browsers.
Its strongest distinction is the breadth of its AI-native workflow primitives. act() handles natural-language browser actions, extract() returns structured data, observe() discovers available actions, and agent() supports autonomous multi-step workflows. Self-healing actions are designed for changing websites, while support for nested iframes and closed Shadow DOM addresses difficult page structures. OpenTelemetry tracing support adds visibility for teams operating these workflows. This combination makes Stagehand a fit for automations that need to move between direct browser commands and higher-level agent behavior without abandoning Playwright-style control.
The tradeoff is platform breadth. Stagehand supports one browser engine, and its cloud execution path is Browserbase rather than a wider set of hosted environments. Local execution and self-hosting give developers deployment control, while Browserbase provides an optional production execution route. Stagehand is free and open source, with no plan-by-plan pricing structure described here. Choose it when AI-native actions, extraction, observation, and self-healing matter more than broad platform coverage. Teams requiring support across more browser engines or a wider execution ecosystem should consider an alternative.
Stagehand pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Natural-language actions, extraction, observation, and agents
- Self-healing workflows with local and Browserbase execution
- Playwright-style APIs plus nested iframe and Shadow DOM support
- Where it doesn't
- Narrower platform coverage than broader browser automation tools
- Supports one browser engine
- Hosted production execution is tied to Browserbase
