Our verdict on SQUID
SQUID brings articles from newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other publishers into a personalized news feed. Readers choose and reorder topics, switch between country editions and local-language news, and block sources they do not want to see. It is available on Android and iOS, with the feed also accessible through Android browsers and the web. SQUID is a fit for readers who want one feed spanning several sources; it is less suited to people seeking included access to publisher subscriptions or a strong offline reading experience.
The app is free, according to its app listings. Its central value is the ability to shape the feed around selected topics and sources rather than rely on one publication. Articles can open on publisher websites or in SQUID’s reader-friendly view. When an article opens on a publisher’s site, any paywall remains in place; SQUID does not include access to that publisher’s paid material. This makes it useful for discovering and organizing coverage, but not a substitute for subscriptions needed to read restricted articles.
SQUID’s multi-source approach is complemented by country editions, local-language news, and article sharing through social networks, email, or SMS. Vertical, full-screen news videos are available in selected countries. Those options suit readers who want to adjust the mix and format of news, while people who need dependable offline access or a single publication’s complete subscriber experience should look elsewhere. Overall, SQUID makes sense for solo readers and small-scale personal use who value a free, customizable feed across publishers and mobile platforms.
