Spyder review
A focused Python IDE for interactive analysis, debugging and data workflows.

Spyder is a free, open-source integrated development environment for Python, designed for scientists, engineers and data analysts. Its workflow centers on interactive execution and inspection: the multilingual editor provides code analysis, completion and go-to-definition; the IPython Console supports interactive execution; and the Variable Explorer lets users inspect and modify data. A Plots pane supports browsing, zooming, copying and saving figures, while documentation access, profiling and interactive debugging extend the development workflow. Spyder supports Windows, macOS and Linux, with standalone installers for Windows and macOS and Conda-based or other supported installation methods for Linux.
The feature set is particularly well matched to exploratory Python work. Projects provide working-directory and PYTHONPATH management, and Git integration is available within projects. The interactive debugger includes breakpoints and stack-frame browsing, while project management, integrated testing support and a code editor with analysis tools give the environment structure beyond a console alone. Remote connections can reach SSH environments, Docker containers, virtual machines and JupyterHub, helping teams connect local development with remote workflows. Optional plugins add notebook editing, terminal access and unit-testing workflows.
Spyder is a strong choice for Python users who value an interactive console, visible data inspection and plotting alongside traditional editing and debugging. The free, open-source model also makes it suitable for users seeking a cross-platform environment without a paid plan structure. The main trade-off is focus: Spyder is oriented toward scientific Python and data workflows rather than the broader feature range of a general-purpose IDE. Unit testing also depends on the optional Spyder-Unittest plugin and is unavailable with the standalone Windows and macOS installers. Choose Spyder for interactive analysis and scientific development; consider another IDE when a wider general-purpose toolset is the priority.
Spyder pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Interactive IPython Console, Variable Explorer and Plots pane
- Debugging, projects, Git integration and code analysis in one environment
- Remote connections through SSH, Docker, virtual machines and JupyterHub
- Where it doesn't
- Unit testing requires an optional Spyder-Unittest plugin
- Standalone Windows and macOS installers do not include unit testing
- Its focus is narrower than a broad general-purpose IDE
