Spring Cloud Config provides server-side and client-side support for externalized configuration in distributed applications. Config Server stores application properties by default in Git and serves them through an HTTP resource-based API as name-value pairs or YAML. Config Client loads remote property sources into the Spring Environment, making the product a natural fit for teams running Spring Boot services across multiple environments. The server can also serve applications written in other languages, while the strongest integration is within Spring applications.

As open-source software, Spring Cloud Config has a free plan and is deployed on infrastructure managed by the user. Its repository options extend beyond Git to include JDBC-compatible databases, Subversion, HashiCorp Vault, CredHub and local filesystems. Git-backed configurations support labelled versions, and the Git backend refresh rate is configurable. This combination suits teams that want repository-based change management while retaining control over deployment and storage. Organizations seeking a hosted configuration service should consider a different product category or deployment model.

Security and runtime control are central capabilities. Property values can be encrypted and decrypted with symmetric or asymmetric encryption, while documented client management endpoints can refresh the environment and refresh scoped beans without restarting the application. These mechanisms support runtime updates, but they do not establish staged rollout controls, so release orchestration remains an operational responsibility. Choose Spring Cloud Config when self-hosting, Git workflows and Spring integration are priorities; look elsewhere if you need a managed service or built-in progressive delivery controls.

Spring Cloud Config pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Git-backed, labelled configuration versions served through HTTP
    • Encryption and decryption for property values with symmetric or asymmetric keys
    • Client refresh endpoints update environments and scoped beans
  • Where it doesn't
    • Deployment is self-hosted rather than a hosted subscription service
    • Refresh mechanisms do not provide staged rollout controls
    • Best fit is Spring ecosystems, despite support for other application languages
