Spotfire Data Virtualization review
A mature enterprise data federation layer with broad connectivity and advanced governance.

Spotfire Data Virtualization provides a logical data layer for accessing, combining, modeling, and querying distributed data without replication. It is aimed at enterprise organizations working across on-premises, cloud, hybrid, big-data, IoT, and enterprise-system environments. Its core capabilities include federated SQL queries, virtual views, transformations, caching, row-based security, governance, scheduled triggers, and REST-based administration. The product is presented on the current Spotfire site as the Spotfire Enterprise Advanced Data Services add-on.
Its strongest fit is an organization that needs to bring heterogeneous sources together while keeping data in place. Federated queries support joins, unions, packaged queries, SQL-based views, and query optimization, while virtual data modeling adds structure and transformation capabilities. Configurable query and data-result caching can control refresh behavior, and row filter policies support row-based access rules. Self-service dataset discovery and profiling add visibility for users working across the federation. Connectivity through JDBC, ODBC, ADO.NET, REST, and SOAP supports established enterprise integration patterns, with APIs available for administration and resource operations.
The published commercial model is contact sales, with the Spotfire Enterprise Advanced Data Services plan covering distributed-source virtualization, non-replicated access and querying, and governed real-time data access. There is no free plan. The product suits teams that need enterprise federation, SQL access, governance controls, recurring procedures, and broad platform connectivity; organizations seeking a free entry tier or a narrowly focused data-access tool should look elsewhere. Its 1996 founding provides a long operating history, while the Spotfire and TIBCO naming reflects the product’s current and former branding.
