Spinnaker is an open-source continuous delivery platform for teams releasing software across multiple cloud and container environments. Its pipeline-based approach supports deployment automation across AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, and Oracle Cloud. It is suited to engineering organizations that need progressive delivery controls, including blue/green deployments, canary analysis, staged rollouts, manual approvals, and rollback operations, while keeping the platform in their own infrastructure.

Its integration coverage is a major strength for heterogeneous delivery environments. Spinnaker connects with cloud targets such as AWS EC2, AWS ECS, AWS EKS, AWS Lambda, Google App Engine, Google Cloud Run, Google Compute Engine, Azure, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, and Oracle Cloud. CI and source integrations include Jenkins, Travis CI, GitHub, Bitbucket Server / Stash, and GitLab. Email, Slack, Twilio, and Datadog integrations extend notifications and operational visibility, while pipeline execution history supports deployment auditing. This makes Spinnaker a practical fit where releases span several providers or require coordination across existing delivery tools.

The tradeoff is operational ownership. Spinnaker is self-hosted, and Kubernetes-based installation is documented by the project, so teams must take responsibility for deploying and operating the platform in their own environment. The open-source model avoids a commercial tier structure but does not provide a packaged managed-service path in the published offering. Choose Spinnaker for multi-cloud progressive delivery with explicit approvals, access controls, and rollback. Consider an alternative if your priority is a vendor-managed deployment service, minimal administration, or built-in AI capabilities.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Customer-operated infrastructure requires installation and ongoing administration
    • Not a tiered commercial product with managed service plans
    • No AI features are included
