SpinKube review
An open-source Kubernetes layer for deploying and operating Spin workloads.

SpinKube is an open-source project for deploying and operating Spin WebAssembly applications in Kubernetes. It is aimed at teams that already run Kubernetes and want to manage Spin workloads using Kubernetes resources and mechanisms. The project combines a Spin Operator, a containerd shim that runs Spin workloads as Kubernetes workloads, and a Runtime Class Manager for shim installation, updates, and configuration. Its focus is operations for Spin applications rather than a broader serverless development lifecycle, so teams seeking a general-purpose framework for multiple workload types may want a different fit.
Kubernetes integration is the central strength. The operator manages SpinApp and SpinAppExecutor custom resources, while workloads can use Kubernetes DNS, probes, metrics, and autoscaling. Scaling can be resource-based or event-driven, with Horizontal Pod Autoscaler and KEDA supported. The Spin Kube CLI plugin adds commands to scaffold, deploy, and inspect workloads. SpinKube also works with containerd and Helm, and its documentation covers installation on Kubernetes clusters and deployments on Azure Kubernetes Service, Linode Kubernetes Engine, Rancher Desktop, and MicroK8s. These components make it relevant for teams standardizing Spin operations around Kubernetes rather than looking for a separate application platform.
SpinKube is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment. That avoids a product plan selection, but operating it means working with Kubernetes and its related components. The available support channels are community and documentation. Its narrow focus is also a practical boundary: it is designed for Spin WebAssembly workloads, and its main role is deploying and operating them. Choose it when your team wants Kubernetes-native operations for Spin; consider an alternative if you need a framework spanning a wider development lifecycle or workloads beyond Spin.
SpinKube pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Manages SpinApp and SpinAppExecutor resources through a Kubernetes operator
- Supports resource-based and event-driven scaling with HPA or KEDA
- Provides a CLI plugin to scaffold, deploy, and inspect workloads
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on operating Spin workloads, not the broader development lifecycle
- Deployment is centered on Kubernetes and self-hosted environments
- Support is through community resources and documentation
