Spin is an open-source framework and CLI for building event-driven applications from WebAssembly components. Developers define components and triggers in a manifest, then build and run applications locally with the Spin CLI. Templates cover Rust, Go, JavaScript, and Python, making Spin relevant to developers creating portable Wasm-based services across those languages. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is aimed at teams that want to develop locally before packaging or deploying their applications.

Its workflow centers on components, triggers, and local iteration rather than managing a hosted service. Spin supports HTTP, Redis, and cron triggers, and spin watch rebuilds and restarts an application when files change. Developers can also run selected components instead of the full application. Once ready, applications can be packaged and published to registries. These capabilities suit projects with event-driven workloads and a component-based design; teams that need a broader set of trigger types or a hosted development environment may prefer a different approach.

Spin is open source and available without a paid plan. It supports self-hosting, and Kubernetes deployment is available through SpinKube; other deployment destinations and implementations are separate projects or providers. That separation matters for teams evaluating deployment management: Spin supplies application-building and packaging capabilities, but the destination is not a managed service within the framework. Documentation is the listed support channel. Choose Spin for local WebAssembly development and portable components; look elsewhere if you want a single hosted product with deployment and support bundled into it.

Spin pros and cons

    • Packages applications for registries and supports Kubernetes through SpinKube
  • Where it doesn't
    • Trigger options listed are limited to HTTP, Redis, and cron
    • Kubernetes deployment depends on the separate SpinKube project
    • Documentation is the listed support channel
