Our verdict on SpeedTree
SpeedTree is a vegetation modeling and environment-creation toolkit from Unity Technologies. It is designed for game developers, filmmakers, visual-effects artists, architects, and real-time content creators who need trees and other vegetation. The Modeler combines procedural generators with manual, nondestructive editing, while photogrammetry workflows support building and texturing from custom meshes. The product runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and connects with Unity Editor, game engines, and DCC applications.
Pricing separates the modeling tool from library access and enterprise licensing. SpeedTree Indie costs $19 per month and includes Modeler, an optional Library Add-on, and all Games and Cinema Exports. SpeedTree Pro costs $899 per year with the same listed Modeler, optional Library Add-on, and export highlights. SpeedTree Library costs $999 per year for a Games or Cinema library and is available as an add-on. SpeedTree Enterprise includes Modeler, Runtime SDK, Games and Cinema Library options, and node-locked or floating licenses. A 30-day free trial is available, and there is no free plan.
Its standout strength is the depth of its vegetation workflow: wind animation can support games and VFX growth or wind point-cache animation; dynamic level-of-detail generation helps prepare assets; and tools cover leaf cutouts, bark detail, trimming, and rigging with movement, bones, and location information. Exports include OBJ, FBX, USD, ABC, XML, and SpeedTree formats. Choose SpeedTree when vegetation is a central part of the pipeline and integrations with game engines or DCC applications matter. Teams seeking broad, general-purpose 3D modeling should consider a less specialized tool.
