Speakerbox review
Open-source speaker identification tools for preparing and evaluating audio datasets.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Speakerbox is an open-source Python library for annotating multi-speaker audio and identifying known speakers in recordings. Researchers and developers preparing speaker-labeled audio datasets can use it to diarize recordings into speaker clusters, split those clusters into clips for manual cleanup, and prepare labeled clips as training data. It is aimed at audio workflows rather than text analytics: it does not document sentiment analysis, entity extraction, intent detection, or topic modeling. That distinction makes it a specialized dataset and speaker-identification tool, not a general text analytics choice.
Its workflow extends from annotation to model application. Labeled audio clips can be used to fine-tune transformer models for identifying known speakers. The library can evaluate those models using accuracy, precision, recall, and a confusion matrix, then apply a trained model to new audio files and return speaker-labeled time spans. This covers data preparation and evaluation in one audio-focused workflow, which may suit developers building or assessing speaker identification models. The documentation says the library has been tested on English-language audio and recommends an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA to speed training.
Speakerbox is open source, has a free plan, and is self-hosted across Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its published support channel is documentation, so teams should be prepared to work from docs rather than expect another listed support route. Choose it when speaker clustering, labeled-audio preparation, and model evaluation are the work at hand. Choose a text analytics product instead if the requirement is sentiment, entity, intent, or topic analysis; those capabilities are outside Speakerbox's documented scope.
Speakerbox pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Diarizes recordings into speaker clusters and splits them into clips
- Supports dataset preparation, model fine-tuning, and evaluation metrics
- Applies trained models to return speaker-labeled time spans
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on audio speaker identification, not text analytics
- Documentation says it has been tested on English-language audio
- Training is faster with an NVIDIA GPU and CUDA, per the documentation
