Our verdict on SpamEater
SpamEater is an open-source, self-hosted disposable email service for personal use, testing, and signups. It runs on a domain and server owned by the operator, with accountless inbox creation and no tracking or analytics. The web interface supports browser-based inbox management, while SMTP reception handles incoming mail. Category capabilities include custom addresses, custom domains, API access, and attachment support, making SpamEater suitable for operators who want disposable email under their own infrastructure rather than a hosted mailbox service.
Its strongest angle is the security and privacy-oriented design. Inboxes and messages are automatically deleted after 24 hours, and email bodies are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. ModSecurity with the OWASP Core Rule Set adds web application firewall protection, while Fail2ban provides intrusion prevention. SMTP, WAF, and API rate limiting are also included. HTTPS certificates can be obtained through Let's Encrypt, giving operators a defined path for encrypted web access.
Deployment options are practical for Linux-based environments: SpamEater provides a Docker image and a native Linux installer. That flexibility suits teams already managing their own server, domain, certificates, and operational controls. The short retention period and accountless workflow fit temporary signups, testing, and disposable inbox use, but they are less appropriate when messages need to remain available beyond a day. Choose SpamEater if infrastructure ownership, short retention, and protective controls matter more than hosted convenience; choose another option if you need a managed service or longer-lived inbox access.
