SpacetimeDB review
A focused backend for database-centric multiplayer games with managed and self-hosted deployment.

SpacetimeDB combines a relational database, embedded server-side application logic, authentication, deployment, and real-time client synchronization. It is aimed at developers building real-time multiplayer games, chat, and collaborative software. Modules can be written in Rust, C#, or TypeScript, with client development supported for C++, Unity, and Unreal. The platform is available through the managed Maincloud service or as a self-hosted deployment on an Ubuntu server.
Pricing is structured across managed and enterprise plans. Maincloud Free costs $0 per month and includes 2,500 TeV of free credit monthly, up to 20 projects, up to 5 databases per project, 5 collaborators per database, and community support. Maincloud Pro costs $25 per month and adds 100,000 TeV of free credit monthly, automatic replication and backups, pay-as-you-go pricing, email support, and an SLA / uptime guarantee. Maincloud Team costs $250 per month and adds dedicated node reservations, unlimited collaborators per database, organization-wide permissions, priority email support, and SLAs. Enterprise provides custom on-premises and cloud deployment, custom scalability and replication, customized pricing and licensing, enterprise SLA and uptime, and 24x7x365 support.
Its strongest fit is for teams that want transactional reducers, real-time row synchronization, OpenID Connect authentication, and database-centric game logic in one backend. Hot-swappable module updates can update server modules without disconnecting clients, while integrations with Unity, Unreal Engine, and React support common development paths. SpacetimeDB is less suitable when built-in matchmaking is central: room- or match-based games require external orchestration. Choose it for multiplayer projects centered on live relational data and flexible deployment; consider an alternative when a broader set of built-in live-ops or matchmaking tools is essential.
SpacetimeDB pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Relational database and embedded server logic in one backend
- Real-time subscriptions synchronize matching rows to clients
- Managed Maincloud and self-hosted Ubuntu deployment options
- Where it doesn't
- Matchmaking requires external orchestration for room- or match-based games
- Feature breadth is narrower than broader game backend platforms
- Advanced support and deployment options require higher-tier plans
