Our verdict on Soulcalibur
Soulcalibur brings 3D weapon-based fighting to the Sega Dreamcast. Its range of play modes suits players who want more than head-to-head matches: there is a two-player VS Battle mode, alongside solo challenges and practice. The game is a fit for players drawn to weapon combat and varied ways to engage with a fighting game, rather than those looking for a free-to-play option or a game centered on online play.
The Dreamcast version includes Arcade, VS Battle, Team Battle, Time Attack, Survival, Mission Battle, Museum and Practice modes. That spread gives it both competitive and solo routes: players can face another person in VS Battle, take on team or survival play, work through Mission Battle, or learn character moves in Practice. Mission Battle also includes unlockable artwork, while Museum mode presents artwork and character profiles. This breadth is the clearest reason to choose Soulcalibur over a fighter focused on a narrower set of modes.
Soulcalibur is a paid release. The Japanese release announcement specified ¥5,800 before tax; that price is tied to the Japanese release. The vendor's archived Dreamcast page also says a related Visual Memory download service has ended. Choose this release for local multiplayer and a substantial set of fighting modes, especially if practice, mission challenges and character material matter alongside matches. It is less suited to buyers seeking online multiplayer or a free entry point; the described VS mode is specifically for two players.
