Sonobuoy is an open-source Kubernetes diagnostic and testing tool for cluster operators and platform teams. It runs conformance and end-to-end Kubernetes tests inside the target cluster, collects selected cluster and node data, and produces reports through an extensible plugin system. Its focus is Kubernetes environments rather than general infrastructure testing, making it a strong fit for teams that need configuration validation, deployed tests, workload debugging, or diagnostic information from clusters they operate.
The plugin system is the product’s main point of depth. Teams can use Kubernetes conformance tests, end-to-end tests, custom extensible plugins, workload debugging, systemd log gathering, and configurable result collection. Plugin result retrieval and reporting provide a way to review test outputs, while cluster and node data collection adds operational context when investigating failures. Air-gapped and custom registry support also suit environments where images and test components must be managed through private or disconnected registries.
Sonobuoy runs locally as a Kubernetes component in the user’s cluster and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted environments. It is free and open source, with support for AWS and Google Cloud Platform environments listed in its category profile. The tradeoff is that it is not a hosted service, so teams need an operating Kubernetes environment and the ability to run components within it. Limited verified integrations may also matter to organizations seeking a broader connected ecosystem. Choose Sonobuoy for Kubernetes conformance, debugging, and configurable diagnostics; consider another tool if hosted delivery or extensive verified integrations is the priority.
