Soli Proxy is a self-hosted HTTP/2 reverse proxy server built with Rust and Hyper. It is aimed at developers and operators who want programmable traffic management alongside application hosting. The proxy supports HTTP/2 and HTTP/1.1, domain-, path-, and regex-based routing, WebSockets, automatic self-signed or Let's Encrypt TLS certificates, and a REST admin API for runtime management. Its deployment documentation covers Linux and macOS binaries, Docker, daemon mode, and systemd deployments.

Traffic control is a central strength. Soli Proxy can balance requests across backends, fail over when services are unavailable, and use circuit breakers to protect unhealthy backends. Health checks, app discovery, and blue-green deployments extend it beyond a narrow request-forwarding role. Lua 5.4 scripting hooks add room for custom behavior, while hot configuration reloads support changes without treating every update as a full service restart. Rate limiting is also included in its category capabilities.

The observability and ecosystem fit are straightforward: a Prometheus metrics endpoint can feed Prometheus, with Grafana available for dashboarding. The project is open source and distributed under the MIT License, with no paid tier separating core capabilities. That makes Soli Proxy a strong fit for teams comfortable managing their own infrastructure and tailoring proxy behavior in code or configuration. Organizations seeking a managed service, a broad hosted ecosystem, or a proxy with minimal operational responsibility should choose an alternative. For self-hosted Linux or macOS environments that need routing, TLS termination, resilience controls, and deployment features in one lightweight service, its scope is well aligned.

Soli Proxy pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Automatic self-signed and Let's Encrypt TLS certificates
    • Routing, load balancing, failover, and circuit breakers
    • Lua hooks, Prometheus metrics, and hot configuration reloads
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires self-hosted deployment and operational ownership
    • The feature set may exceed simple proxying needs
    • Linux and macOS binaries are specifically documented
