SolarWinds Observability review
A broad hybrid observability platform with modular pricing and extensive monitoring coverage.

SolarWinds Observability is a full-stack application performance and observability platform for DevOps, IT operations, and CloudOps teams. It combines application metrics, service monitoring, distributed transaction tracing, code profiling, exception tracking, logs, database data, infrastructure monitoring, network monitoring, and digital experience monitoring. Cloud-native applications, microservices, Kubernetes, containers, on-premises infrastructure, and hybrid estates are all within its stated coverage. Deployment can be cloud-native SaaS, self-hosted, or a combination of both.
Pricing is modular. Log Observability starts at $5 per GB per month with annual billing and includes multi-source log management. Self-Hosted Essentials is $8 per node per month and adds self-hosted observability, network performance monitoring, server and application management, and log monitoring and analysis. Synthetic monitoring costs $10 per 10 uptime or 2 transaction checks, while Real User Monitoring costs $10 per 100,000 page views. Application Observability is $27.50 per service per month, covering application metrics, distributed tracing, and code profiling. Database Observability is $70 per database instance, with database performance analysis and root-cause diagnostics. A 30-day free trial is available, but there is no free plan.
The platform stands out when teams need more than application traces alone. Service topology maps connect related services, databases, clusters, and communication paths, while multi-source log search, filtering, and alerting support cross-system investigation. Real User Monitoring adds page, region, device, and browser analysis, and machine-learning anomaly detection helps prioritize alerts. Public API and third-party integrations extend the platform, while Platform Connect links SaaS and self-hosted deployments. Choose SolarWinds Observability for broad, hybrid monitoring across application, infrastructure, network, database, log, and user-experience layers. Teams with a narrow APM requirement may prefer a simpler, less modular approach.
SolarWinds Observability pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Combines tracing, profiling, logs, RUM, topology, and database monitoring
- Supports SaaS, self-hosted, and hybrid deployment models
- Adds anomaly detection and alert prioritization through AIOps features
- Where it doesn't
- Separate module pricing can make broad deployments harder to budget
- Listed prices use annual billing, limiting month-to-month flexibility
- Its broad scope may exceed the needs of teams seeking only APM
