Our verdict on Social Narratives
Social Narratives is an iPhone and iPad app for parents, carers, educators and support professionals who want to prepare a child for a particular situation. Describe an upcoming event or change, then use child profiles to include relevant preferences and support needs. Stories can cover appointments, school, travel, personal care, social events and routine changes. The app is designed for autistic children and may also support children with ADHD, sensory or communication differences. Its focus is preparation through personalized narratives, not a broad set of learning activities.
Personalization is the central feature. Profiles can capture support needs and visual attributes, and stories explain people, places, sequences, sensory details, choices and available support. Optional personalized illustrations can accompany the text. Stories can be saved, marked as favourites and revisited; device text-to-speech reads them aloud with adjustable speed. The app supports English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Swedish. PDF export makes stories printable or shareable, which may suit families and professionals who want to revisit a narrative away from the app. These features make it a more specific fit than a general autism learning app: choose it for customized social stories, rather than lessons or a wider curriculum.
Social Narratives has a free plan with three credits for new users, plus monthly subscriptions for 200 or 500 credits and one-off Mini, Plus and Pro credit packs. According to the published plan information, subscription credits expire at the end of each subscription month, while credit-pack credits do not; US App Store prices may vary by region. That structure gives occasional users a one-off option and regular users a monthly allowance, but buyers should consider how often they expect to generate stories.
