Snowflake Cortex Search is a managed search service for organizations building low-latency search, retrieval-augmented generation, enterprise search, and agent applications over Snowflake data. It combines vector and keyword retrieval with semantic reranking, supports metadata and attribute filtering, and works through web-accessible REST, Python, and SQL interfaces. Snowflake data teams needing hybrid retrieval are the clearest fit, particularly when application search and AI experiences already depend on Snowflake’s cloud data platform.

Its main strength is retrieval depth within that environment. Cortex Search supports equality, range, array, and primary-key filtering, along with configurable scoring boosts, time decay, component weights, and reranking. Teams can use hosted embedding models, including multilingual models, or provide their own vector embeddings. Multi-index search and automated index refreshes as underlying data changes extend the service beyond a basic vector lookup layer. Automatic serving suspension after query inactivity is also part of the operating model.

Pricing follows Snowflake consumption rather than a fixed subscription plan. The Cortex Search usage model charges serving compute by indexed data, with the service-consumption table listing 6.3 AI Credits per GB per month of indexed data; additional warehouse and embedding-token costs may apply. That structure suits teams already managing Snowflake usage and wanting search close to their data, but it requires attention to the full consumption profile. Choose Cortex Search for Snowflake-centered hybrid retrieval with managed embeddings, filtering, refreshes, and multiple APIs. Consider another option if you need a standalone vector database deployment outside Snowflake or a fixed subscription structure.
