Our verdict on SnapTray

SnapTray is a free, open-source desktop application for capturing, annotating, and recording screens. It suits people who need a lightweight tool for visual explanations, issue reports, tutorials, or quick desktop references across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Region capture includes magnifier precision, while Screen Canvas supports drawing over the desktop. Annotation options cover arrows, shapes, text, mosaic, step badges, and emoji stickers, with undo and redo across annotation operations.

Its strongest area is the breadth of its desktop workflow. Users can detect windows, pick colors, pin images above other windows, resize and rotate pinned images, and apply OCR or automatic blur on macOS and Windows. Screen recording on those two platforms exports to MP4, GIF, and WebP. The command-line interface and local IPC automation also give it a practical fit for scripted capture workflows. The product is free and open source under the MIT license, making it a straightforward option when local ownership matters more than a hosted collaboration layer.

The main trade-off is platform parity. Linux support is a Ubuntu 22.04 X11 beta, and it excludes both OCR and recording, so Linux users receive a narrower feature set than macOS and Windows users. SnapTray also lacks integrations and cloud sharing, which limits its fit for teams that need connected review, centralized assets, or browser-based collaboration. Choose it for local screenshot work, detailed annotation, redaction, recording on supported platforms, and automation; choose an alternative when shared workspaces or consistent recording and OCR across Linux are essential.
