Smarty review
Smarty separates PHP views from application logic and compiles templates for reuse.

Smarty is an open-source PHP template engine for teams that want presentation handled separately from application logic. PHP applications pass content and variables into templates, where tags format and render them. That arrangement can suit projects in which developers and template designers work separately, with Smarty serving as the view component rather than an application framework.
Its rendering workflow is a central strength: Smarty compiles templates into PHP scripts and recompiles them when source files change, while built-in caching can reuse compiled output. Template inheritance uses parent and child blocks, and custom functions and variable modifiers let teams extend template behavior. Configurable tag delimiters offer another way to adapt templates to a project. This is a focused set of view-layer capabilities, so it fits PHP teams seeking reusable presentation templates more directly than teams looking for a broader application platform.
Smarty is free and open source under the LGPL, and its deployment model is self-hosted. That makes it a fit for teams already operating PHP applications and prepared to manage the engine within that environment. One important implementation choice concerns escaping: HTML escaping is available as an option, but it is not enabled by default, so teams should account for that when configuring template output. Support is community-based. Choose Smarty when PHP template separation, inheritance, and compilation align with the application; consider another approach if you need automatic escaping enabled by default or a hosted service.
Smarty pros and cons

- Template inheritance lets child templates fill parent blocks
- Built-in caching plus custom functions and variable modifiers
- Where it doesn't
- HTML escaping is optional rather than enabled by default
- Self-hosted deployment requires a PHP application
- Support is community-based
