Our verdict on SmartSub
SmartSub is an open-source desktop application for turning video and audio into subtitles, then editing, translating, dubbing, styling, and rendering them into finished videos. It is aimed at technical users who want free local captioning across Windows, macOS, and Linux, with the option to connect cloud services when local processing is not preferred. Local processing and GPU acceleration options support a workflow that can stay on the user's computer, while online video downloading adds a direct path from supported services such as YouTube and Bilibili.
Its strongest advantage is breadth. SmartSub combines speech-to-text subtitle generation, subtitle translation, proofreading, AI refinement, speaker identification, role labeling, and batch processing in one application. It exports to SRT, VTT, ASS, LRC, and TXT, and supports both permanent subtitle burn-in and soft subtitle muxing. Styling controls cover fonts, colors, outlines, shadows, positioning, and presets. For multilingual or narrated content, text-to-speech dubbing includes timeline alignment, while local and cloud voice cloning extend the audio workflow beyond caption creation.
