Our verdict on SmartBuilder

SmartBuilder is e-learning authoring software for instructional designers and organizations creating interactive learning content. Its feature set is particularly relevant to authors building branching scenarios, interactive video and software simulations, with responsive course layouts for learners on different screen sizes. The authoring application installs on Windows or Mac, and published courses run in modern browsers on computers and mobile devices. That makes it a fit for teams whose work calls for varied interactions and LMS-ready output, rather than a basic slide-based course workflow.

The authoring depth is its clearest distinction. Authors can use Action Blocks to configure triggers, conditions and responses, start from branching scenario templates, add cue-point actions to video, and record software simulations. Question templates, quiz results and LMS score reporting support assessment workflows. PowerPoint import provides another route into course creation, while text can be exported and imported through Word or XLIFF for localization. An AI assistant can generate text, quiz questions, drag-and-drop activities and layouts. This breadth should suit projects combining demonstrations, decision-making and assessment; teams needing only straightforward content pages may not need so many authoring options.

According to the published plans, SmartBuilder costs $139 per month or $1,399 per year. Both plans include all authoring features, a growing template library, HTML5 output, SCORM, AICC and xAPI output, free lesson hosting, and installation on PC or Mac. A 30-day free trial is available without a card requirement, but there is no free plan. The monthly entry price makes it a paid commitment after the trial, so prospective buyers should weigh the interaction and simulation tools against their course requirements. Choose it when those capabilities and standards-based publishing matter; consider a simpler alternative if you do not need them.
