sip-exporter review
A focused Linux sensor for SIP, RTP quality, fraud signals, and Prometheus-based observability.

sip-exporter is an open-source Linux sensor for monitoring IPv4/UDP SIP signaling and correlated RTP/RTCP media traffic. It is designed for teams that already operate Prometheus and Grafana and want detailed SIP observability within a self-hosted environment. The software exposes SIP performance, voice-quality, media, session, traffic, fraud-detection, and diagnostic metrics, including MOS, jitter, packet loss, and packet-delay variation. Multi-interface monitoring, per-carrier and per-device-type labels, and geo-enrichment add useful dimensions for investigating call quality and traffic patterns.
Its strongest fit is an existing Prometheus/Grafana monitoring stack. sip-exporter provides a Prometheus metrics endpoint and supports Grafana dashboards, while Docker is listed among its integrations. The standout capability is the correlation of SIP signaling with RTP and RTCP analysis, giving operators a more connected view of signaling and media conditions than basic SIP-only metrics. eBPF-based capture and a Go-based parser support its role as a network-level sensor, while fraud detection signals and SIP/RTP diagnostic metrics extend the monitoring scope beyond voice-quality scoring alone.
The trade-off is operational scope. sip-exporter is self-hosted, Linux-only, and requires privileged access to the host network interface where SIP signaling and RTP media are visible. Its documented capture model covers IPv4/UDP traffic, so teams needing broader protocol coverage, synthetic call generation, dedicated SIP-trunk monitoring, or commercial monitoring-suite features should choose an alternative. Pick sip-exporter when open-source deployment and Prometheus/Grafana integration are priorities; avoid it when a managed service or wider platform coverage matters more.
sip-exporter pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free open-source eBPF capture for IPv4/UDP SIP traffic
- Correlates RTP and RTCP with MOS, jitter, loss, and delay variation
- Prometheus, Grafana, Docker, and multi-interface support
- Where it doesn't
- Limited to Linux and self-hosted deployments
- Requires privileged access to a visible host network interface
- Focused on IPv4/UDP rather than broader monitoring coverage
