SimpleOrgChart review
A Microsoft-focused, self-hosted directory with org charts, reporting, and exports.

SimpleOrgChart is an open-source employee directory and organization chart for teams that manage employee data in Microsoft Entra ID. It reads that data through Microsoft Graph and presents it in a web interface with employee search, configurable filters, and an interactive D3 chart. The chart supports pan, zoom, and expand/collapse controls, while Microsoft Teams presence indicators add a Microsoft-specific view of colleagues. Its stated fit spans small, mid-market, and enterprise organizations, but the self-hosting requirement makes it most relevant to teams able to run and maintain their own deployment.
The product’s strongest fit is its Microsoft ecosystem focus. It integrates with Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Graph API, Microsoft Teams, and SMTP. Synchronization can run nightly or manually, and optional Microsoft Entra OIDC authentication supports group-based access control. Admin reporting covers managers, sign-ins, hires, profile pictures, and data quality. Teams can export chart or directory information in SVG, PNG, PDF, and XLSX formats; scheduled email reports can include XLSX and PNG attachments. This combination suits organizations seeking both a browsable directory and operational views of their employee data, rather than only a static chart.
Deployment is a meaningful tradeoff: SimpleOrgChart is intended for containerized self-hosting with Docker Compose and requires an Azure tenant, app-registration permissions, and Graph permissions. The project is MIT-licensed, and its listed support channel is documentation, so teams should be prepared to handle deployment and administration themselves. Choose it if a Microsoft-based directory, reporting, and export workflow are priorities and self-hosting is acceptable. Teams wanting a hosted service, broader platform fit, or a different support model should consider alternatives.
