Simple Invoices is a free, open-source, self-hosted web application for creating, sending, and managing invoices. It suits businesses that want to operate their own invoicing system and keep invoice data on their server. The application handles itemized and total invoices, customer and biller records, products, taxes, reports, payment tracking, and invoice-status management. It also supports customer self-service through a portal for invoices, payment history, and payments.

The published licensing details describe the software as GPLv3-licensed, with no license fees or per-user charges. Its feature set is broad for a free invoicing application: recurring invoices can run daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly; invoices can be generated as PDFs and emailed with attachments; and online payments can connect with Stripe, PayPal, Mollie, Coinbase, Authorize.net, Adyen, eWay, Ko-fi, and PaymentsGateway. Multiple currencies and per-invoice currency settings make it suitable for businesses billing across currencies. Multiple isolated invoice domains can also run from one installation.

The main trade-off is the self-hosted operating model. Installation requires a server using Docker or a traditional PHP and database stack, so it is a better fit for organizations prepared to manage their own deployment than for buyers seeking a hosted service with minimal administration. Its export options—PDF, XLSX, DOCX, and HTML print view—support flexible record handling, while browser access keeps the working interface web-based. Choose Simple Invoices when control, extensibility, payment options, and data ownership matter; choose a managed alternative when avoiding server setup is the priority.

Simple Invoices pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Recurring invoices support daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly schedules
    • Online payments, multi-currency invoices, and customer portals are included
    • Exports include PDF, XLSX, DOCX, and HTML print view
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires server installation through Docker or a PHP and database stack
    • Self-hosting places deployment responsibility on the business
    • Managed, ready-to-use hosting is not its primary model
