Simian Similarity Analyzer is an open-source, Java-based command-line tool for finding duplicated code blocks in human-readable source files. It is aimed at software engineers, source-code reviewers, and litigation teams performing code-similarity analysis. The tool uses text-based scanning across repositories and supports many programming and markup languages, including Java, C, C++, C#, COBOL, Python, Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, XML, CSS, and Visual Basic. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and other JVM environments.

Its strongest fit is a mature pipeline-scanning workflow. Simian can run locally through the Java Virtual Machine, from scripts, in build pipelines, or as part of pre-commit checks. Configurable filtering options, thresholds, and duplication failure behavior let teams decide which findings should be reported and when duplication should affect a build. Output is available in plain text, XML, YAML, and editor-friendly formats, giving teams several ways to feed results into review or automation processes. The open-source model also suits organizations that want local execution rather than a hosted scanning service.

The main trade-off is its narrow, text-based approach and command-line orientation. Simian is designed to identify duplicated text in source files, so teams looking specifically for deeper structural or semantic clone analysis may need a different tool. It also has no IDE integration, and JVM execution adds a runtime requirement to setup and automation. Choose Simian for repository-wide duplicate detection, configurable pipeline enforcement, and broad language coverage; choose an alternative if editor-native feedback or non-textual similarity analysis is central to the workflow.

Simian Similarity Analyzer pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Scans large repositories across many programming and markup languages
    • Supports configurable filters, thresholds, and duplication failure behavior
    • Runs locally with multiple report formats for pipelines and pre-commit checks
  • Where it doesn't
    • Text-based detection may miss structural similarities beyond duplicated text
    • No IDE integration is provided
    • Java Virtual Machine execution adds a runtime dependency
