Where it wins
- Massively parallel CUDA/Numba Monte Carlo simulation
- Configurable fibers, cells, diffusivities and orientations
- NPY/NIfTI outputs with built-in diffusion schemes
Where it doesn't
- Requires a CUDA-capable GPU for local simulation
- Command-line and INI configuration require technical setup
- Specialized scope centers on diffusion-weighted MRI models
Our verdict on simDRIFT
simDRIFT is a Python package for massively parallel forward simulations of diffusion-weighted MRI experiments in biophysically relevant tissue systems. It targets diffusion-MRI researchers who develop or validate signal-processing models, create in-silico phantoms, or teach diffusion-imaging concepts. Monte Carlo random walks model configurable fiber bundles, spherical cells and water compartments, while user-defined microstructural and scanning parameters shape each simulation.
Its standout capability is GPU-oriented simulation through CUDA and Numba, with Monte Carlo PGSE diffusion-weighted MRI as the core method. Researchers can set fiber radii, diffusivities, orientations and densities, configure spherical cell populations and water diffusivity, and select DBSI, ABCD or NODDI diffusion schemes. Custom b-value and gradient-vector input files extend control over scanning parameters, making the package suited to controlled model-validation workflows rather than general-purpose physics simulation.
simDRIFT runs locally through a command-line interface driven by INI configuration files, with Python tools for creating and editing those configurations. Simulations generate trajectory and signal outputs in NPY and NIfTI formats, and the deployment model supports desktop or self-hosted use. A CUDA-capable GPU is required, so teams without compatible hardware should look elsewhere. The documentation identifies the project as under active development and lists documentation and community support. Choose simDRIFT for focused, programmable diffusion-MRI experiments; choose a broader tool when your work extends beyond this tissue-modeling domain.
