Shifter review
An open-source Linux engine tailored to Slurm- and MPI-based HPC workloads.

Shifter is an open-source container platform developed by NERSC for running containerized applications on high-performance computing systems. It is aimed at scientific and research workloads that need containers on HPC compute and login nodes, particularly environments organized around Slurm and MPI. Users can pull images from Docker Hub or private registries, then run them interactively through the shifter command or within batch jobs. The platform also supports Docker entry points, volume and bind mounts, and image lookup by digest or image identifier.
Its strongest fit is the way container execution maps to HPC operations. Shifter converts pulled Docker images into a flattened format designed for HPC distribution and mounting, while batch scheduler integration includes Slurm directives. MPI integration can use host-provided Cray libraries, which suits workloads that need to connect containerized applications with HPC network environments. These capabilities make Shifter more focused than a general-purpose container engine: teams working with Slurm, MPI, and shared HPC infrastructure get features shaped around their execution model, while teams seeking broad desktop or multi-platform support should look elsewhere.
The main trade-offs are architectural and strategic. Shifter is Linux-only, its documented architecture is not rootless, and privileged setup operations are required. It also does not provide image building, so image creation must happen outside the platform before registry pulls and conversion. NERSC states that Shifter remains supported but plans to phase it out in favor of podman-hpc. Choose Shifter when an existing HPC environment needs its Slurm, MPI, registry, and mounting workflow; consider an alternative when rootless operation, built-in image building, or a longer-term path centered on Shifter is important.
Shifter pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Runs interactive and batch containers across HPC compute and login nodes
- Connects Docker Hub, private registries, Slurm, and MPI workflows
- Flattens images for HPC mounting and supports volume and bind mounts
- Where it doesn't
- Linux-only with no rootless mode in its documented architecture
- Does not provide image-building capability
- NERSC plans to phase it out in favor of podman-hpc
