Sheltora is a free desktop client with a Commander companion that adds a keyboard-driven, dual-pane file manager. It is aimed at people who want consistent file handling across Windows, macOS and Linux, with local browsing alongside optional remote connections. Core tasks include copying, moving, renaming and creating files and folders, while drag-and-drop transfers support a more visual workflow. Image-thumbnail galleries and folder-size calculations add useful inspection tools for everyday organization.

The free offering covers a broad set of file-management functions without a paid tier described in the published plans. Archive support includes ZIP and TAR.GZ packing and extraction, and the client also connects through FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SSH and S3. The broader desktop client includes RDP and VNC, while the file manager focuses on local folders, archives and optional SFTP/FTP connections. macOS and Linux users can view and change Unix permissions, and the SSH terminal includes tabs, giving technical users more ways to manage remote work from one desktop application.

Sheltora’s main tradeoff is its public beta status. The vendor says the software is completely free currently and may introduce a freemium model in the future, so teams choosing it for a long-term standard should account for possible pricing changes. It fits individual users, developers and cross-platform teams that value a simple dual-pane workflow with occasional remote access. Users who need a settled commercial model or a mature, narrowly governed enterprise file platform may prefer an alternative with those priorities clearly established.

Sheltora pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free on Windows, macOS and Linux
    • Dual panes with archives, thumbnails and folder sizing
    • Optional FTP, SFTP, SSH terminal and Unix permissions
  • Where it doesn't
    • Public beta status may matter to risk-sensitive teams
    • Future freemium pricing may change the cost model
    • Remote access is optional rather than the central file workflow
