ShadowFreeze is Windows system-restore software that uses copy-on-write overlays to keep disk partitions at a known baseline during use. Reboots or an on-demand discard remove session changes, while selected files, folders, registry entries or complete sessions can be committed permanently. The product is aimed at kiosks, classrooms, laboratories, shared PCs and software-testing workstations that need repeatable desktop states. It runs on desktop Windows and includes a kiosk lockout mode with administrator and password gating.

The paid lineup separates personal and organizational use. ShadowFreeze Home covers private, non-commercial use on unlimited personally owned devices, with one year of use and updates. ShadowFreeze Personal offers a perpetual license for private, non-commercial use, with one year of updates included. ShadowFreeze Business is for commercial and organizational use and licenses one device, with one year of updates. There is no free plan. Buyers should match the license to ownership, commercial status and the number of protected machines.

Its standout capability is the breadth of the freeze boundary: complete Windows system drives can include EFI and recovery partitions, while data partitions can also be frozen independently. Persistent freezing survives restarts and hibernation, and AES-256-XTS encryption protects the shadow store. GUI, command-line, Explorer and WinRE tools support different recovery workflows. Organizations needing kiosk or workstation rollback should find the feature set well aligned; teams operating mixed platforms or requiring central fleet administration should choose a product built for those needs instead.

ShadowFreeze pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Copy-on-write freezing can cover full Windows volumes, EFI and recovery partitions.
    • Commit controls preserve selected files, folders, registry keys or entire sessions.
    • AES-256-XTS encryption plus GUI, CLI, Explorer and WinRE recovery tools.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows-only support limits use across mixed operating-system environments.
    • Business licensing covers one device per license.
    • Designed around per-device controls rather than central fleet management.
