Setuptools is an open-source Python build backend and packaging library for developers creating distributable libraries, applications, and command-line tools. It works across Windows, macOS, and Linux, and reads project metadata from pyproject.toml, setup.cfg, or setup.py. Its core role is to describe a project, discover its packages, declare dependencies, and produce installable distribution artifacts.

For build and metadata work, setuptools covers a broad set of common requirements. It supports PEP 517 build backend configuration, source distributions, wheels, automatic and configurable package discovery, namespace package discovery, dependency version constraints, environment markers, optional dependencies, extras, entry points, automatic script creation, and editable installations. It can work with frontend tools such as pip and build, making it suitable for projects that need a configurable packaging backend rather than a complete project-management system.

The boundary is important for tool selection. Setuptools does not provide lockfiles or environment management, so projects needing those capabilities should pair it with other tooling or choose a broader workflow. It also does not handle package publishing itself; uploads to PyPI are handled by tools such as Twine. Choose setuptools when the priority is package builds, distribution metadata, discovery, dependencies, and editable installs. Look elsewhere, or add complementary tools, when reproducible dependency locking, environment management, or publishing workflows are central requirements.

setuptools pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Builds source distributions and wheels with PEP 517 support
    • Discovers regular and namespace packages automatically or configurably
    • Supports dependencies, extras, entry points, scripts, and editable installs
  • Where it doesn't
    • Does not provide lockfiles
    • Does not manage environments
    • Package publishing requires a separate tool such as Twine
