Our verdict on Settler
Settler is an open-source reconciliation engine for matching financial data across payment processors, banks, accounting systems, ERPs, and ledgers. It is aimed at engineering-led teams that need control over deployment, audit evidence, exception handling, and integration. Rules-based matching supports field-level tolerance controls, while exception workflows record review history and operator decisions. The product is available through web, API, and self-hosted deployments, with TypeScript and Python SDKs plus CLI access.
Its strongest fit is an environment where reconciliation results must be explainable and repeatable. Settler creates hash-linked reconciliation evidence and audit trails, supports replayable runs, and includes drift detection. Role-based access controls and tenant isolation address operational separation, while approval controls and exception triage support review-based workflows. Pre-built adapters cover payment, e-commerce, and accounting platforms, including Stripe, Shopify, PayPal, QuickBooks, Square, Adyen, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Xero, NetSuite, Plaid, and SAP.
The engagement models separate core access from managed governance. Self-Serve provides full API and SDK access, standard integrations, community support, deterministic audit trails, and usage-based scaling. Managed Deployment adds priority technical support, advanced adapter configuration, SOC 2 compliance readiness, extended data retention, and a dedicated onboarding session. Enterprise Contract adds dedicated account management, custom adapter development, an on-premise deployment option, governance boundary controls, and enterprise SLA guarantees. Teams wanting self-hosting and engineering control should consider Settler; organizations seeking a simpler reconciliation tool or a fully managed experience without tier-based deployment choices may prefer an alternative.
