Our verdict on Serendipity

Serendipity is an open-source, PHP-powered weblog engine for casual bloggers and professional applications. It is designed for people who want to manage a blog on their own web server or local machine rather than use a hosted SaaS platform. The administration interface covers entries, media, comments, categories, tags, and multiple users, while customizable permalinks, URL rewriting, RSS 2.0, and Atom 1.0 support cover core publishing needs. Its BSD license and 2002 founding also give it a long-running open-source profile.

The editing and publishing feature set is broad for a traditional blog. Writers can work in WYSIWYG, Markdown, Textile, plain-text, or HTML formats, and the integrated image manager handles media within the administration interface. Nested categories and tags support structured archives, while comments, trackbacks, pingbacks, and moderation cover conversation and publishing workflows. Theme customization uses Smarty templates, and the plugin system supports sidebar and event plugins. Scheduled posts, custom domains, and custom-code theme editing are included in the category specifications.

Serendipity also fits sites that need control over users, permissions, feeds, and publishing URLs. Integrations include Akismet, the Blogger API, and the Movable Type XML-RPC API, with XML-RPC editing available alongside the web interface. Automatic version upgrading is included, and the software supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases. The trade-off is its self-hosted model: installation and ongoing operation sit with the site owner, and the product does not offer the hosted convenience or verified analytics associated with some alternatives. Choose Serendipity for control, format flexibility, and traditional blog administration; choose a hosted platform instead if managed infrastructure is the priority.
