Our verdict on WordPress
WordPress is open-source publishing software and a content management system for creators, small businesses, publishers, developers, and enterprises. The downloadable software supports websites, blogs, portals, online communities, and applications through blocks, themes, plugins, and a REST API. It suits teams that need control over content structure, publishing processes, user access, media, and site extensions rather than a narrowly defined blogging workflow.
The published plan is WordPress software: a free, one-time-download product priced at $0 USD, released under GPLv2 or later with no licensing fees. It is downloadable and self-hosted, so users manage the compatible hosting and their own infrastructure. Separate costs may apply to hosting, domains, maintenance, themes, and plugins. This model makes WordPress attractive when ownership and configurability matter, but less suitable for teams seeking a packaged hosted service with infrastructure handled for them.
Its strongest distinction is breadth. Block-based editing supports content creation, while drafts, scheduled publishing, revisions, and private content provide editorial control. Role-based capabilities support differentiated access; the media library includes uploading, filtering, editing, and metadata; and built-in search optimization features and permalinks cover core publishing needs. Multilingual administration, translations, custom post types, taxonomies, metadata, structured content, and the REST API extend the platform for more complex sites and applications. The Plugin Directory, Theme Directory, Openverse, and API add to that ecosystem. Choose WordPress if maximum control, extensibility, and self-hosting fit your team. Choose another option if you want hosting and ongoing site operations bundled into the product.
