Seq review
A self-hosted structured logging server with SQL-like queries, live tailing, and alerts.

Seq is a self-hosted observability server for structured application logs, traces, and metrics. It accepts telemetry through HTTP, OpenTelemetry, logging libraries, and custom inputs, then supports real-time search, filtering, SQL-like queries, dashboards, time-sliced charts, condition-based alerts, and live event tailing. Windows, Docker/Linux, web, API, and self-hosted deployment options support development teams and organizations that want telemetry stored on infrastructure they choose.
The published annual plans separate individual use from team and larger deployments. Individual costs $0 per year for 1 user, community support, a 50 GB storage limit, up to 100 million metric samples, and unlimited retention time. Team costs $1,090 per year for up to 10 users, priority email support, 100 GB of storage, up to 1 billion metric samples, and 1 server install. Standard costs $2,990 per year with unlimited users, storage, and metric samples, plus up to 3 server installs. Datacenter costs $10,990 per year and adds clustering, auditing, and assisted onboarding. A 30-day free trial is also available.
Seq fits ecosystems that already emit through HTTP, OpenTelemetry, Serilog, Docker GELF, Syslog, or RabbitMQ, and it can send notifications through Slack, Microsoft Teams, and SMTP. Retention policies, log export, JSON archiving, API-key filtering on arrival, clustering, and high availability cover operational workflows beyond basic search. Choose Seq when self-hosting, structured ingestion, and infrastructure control matter. Teams wanting a vendor-managed logging service, or needing more capacity than the Team plan's limits, should compare alternatives; Seq's model places deployment and infrastructure responsibility with the customer.
Seq pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Structured logs, traces, and metrics with SQL-like queries
- Live tailing, dashboards, alerts, export, and JSON archiving
- Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, and customer infrastructure
- Where it doesn't
- Team limits usage to 10 users, 100 GB, and one server install
- Advanced clustering, auditing, and assisted onboarding require Datacenter
- Operating customer-chosen infrastructure requires internal deployment ownership
