Searchmonkey III review
A free, open-source filesystem search tool with live results across three desktop platforms.

Searchmonkey III is an open-source desktop application for finding text in local files and folders. It is aimed at developers, log inspection, large directories, and anyone who needs current filesystem results without maintaining a background index or daemon. The core application is free and MIT-licensed, and it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its search model is direct filesystem searching rather than indexed lookup, with results streamed as they are found.
The core feature set covers literal and regular-expression searches, filtering, glob support, and live result streaming. Permission-aware reporting distinguishes searched, skipped, filtered, and blocked files, which gives users more context when a result set does not include every reachable path. This makes Searchmonkey III a focused fit for local text discovery and log-oriented work. Its scope is narrower than a broader information-retrieval tool: the published category specifications identify local file and folder content search rather than email search.
Document and image content search is available through optional local plugins. The PDF Extractor plugin costs $9 one time and adds searchable PDF text with layout preservation. The Office Documents plugin costs $14 one time and supports DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, ODT, and RTF. The Image OCR plugin costs $18 one time and adds image preprocessing and local OCR text extraction. Choose Searchmonkey III if cross-platform, live filesystem searching and transparent permission reporting matter most. Choose another tool if you need email search or prefer built-in document extraction without separately purchased add-ons.
