Our verdict on RunnerUp
RunnerUp is a free, open-source Android app for individual runners who want phone-based GPS activity tracking and performance-focused workout tools. It records pace, distance, and time, while configurable audio cues provide progress updates during a run. Runners can create interval workouts, set pace or heart-rate-zone targets, and review heart-rate zones. Its focus is clearly running rather than general fitness management, making it a suitable choice for Android users who want detailed run tracking without a paid plan.
The standout strength is the combination of configurable workouts and device support. RunnerUp supports Bluetooth SMART, PolarWearLink, Zephyr, and ANT+ heart-rate monitors, along with heart-rate-zone configuration. Its Wear OS companion app extends the tracking setup to compatible watches. These features give runners more control over interval sessions and target-based training than a basic GPS log. The app can also upload activities to Strava, Runalyze, RunKeeper, RunningAHEAD, and WebDAV, which helps it fit into an existing fitness-service workflow.
RunnerUp’s narrow scope is also its main limitation. The published product details describe custom workout programming and performance progress tracking, but not a broader library of workout programs or general fitness planning. Platform coverage is limited to Android, so runners on other mobile platforms should choose an alternative. Android runners who value open-source software, configurable running sessions, external uploads, and monitor support should find the feature set well aligned with those needs. It is less suitable for people seeking cross-platform access or a wider workout-management product beyond running.
