runhcs review
A focused, open-source runtime for OCI workloads on Windows Server.

runhcs is an open-source Windows container runtime developed in Microsoft’s hcsshim project. It runs OCI-packaged applications on Windows and communicates with the Windows Host Compute Service to create and manage containers. The project is aimed at teams running containers on Windows Server 2016 or later, especially where Windows process isolation, Hyper-V isolation, host-process containers, containerd, or Kubernetes CRI interactions are required.
Its strongest fit is the combination of Windows-specific isolation options and containerd integration. runhcs supports Windows process-isolated containers, Windows and Linux Hyper-V-isolated containers, and host-process containers. It also provides a containerd runtime v2 shim and supports lifecycle operations including create, start, exec, pause, resume, kill, delete, and list. Integrations include containerd, Moby, and Kubernetes CRI, giving it a clear role in container workflows that depend on these components.
The main trade-off is its narrow platform and runtime focus. runhcs is designed for Windows Server rather than a cross-platform environment, and its primary purpose is executing and managing containers through Windows Host Compute Service. The project is maintained within the broader hcsshim repository and is provided both as an OCI runtime and as a containerd shim. The repository documents newer V2 shims separately, with some implementations marked as coming soon. Choose runhcs for Windows Server OCI execution and containerd-based orchestration; choose another option when you need a runtime focused beyond Windows or outside this integration model.
runhcs pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Runs OCI applications with Windows process and Hyper-V isolation
- Supports containerd runtime shim v2 and Kubernetes CRI interactions
- Offers lifecycle operations plus host-process container support
- Where it doesn't
- Runs on Windows Server only
- Focused on runtime execution rather than broad container tooling
- Some newer V2 shim implementations are marked as coming soon
