Our verdict on RTHextion
RTHextion is a desktop hex editor for ROM hacking and retro-game translation, aimed at solo editors working with binary data across multiple games. It combines text-table support with pointer and script tools, so it suits projects where editing dialogue or other text requires careful handling of offsets. The published project offers Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads and is licensed under GPL-3.0.
Its strongest fit is detailed text and pointer work rather than visual asset editing. Multiple translation tables and a built-in table editor support game-specific character mappings, while pointer search and navigation provide previews of referenced data. Script dumping and import cover moving text in and out of a ROM; insertion at offsets can trigger automatic pointer updates. RTHextion also creates and imports IPS patches, organizes files into nested sections, and tracks changes across tabs and saved sessions. Automatic detection of supported ROM types and byte order helps accommodate formats from Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and other systems.
The trade-off is scope: RTHextion does not include tile or sprite editing, and its hex-editor approach is less visual and broad than dedicated game editors. It is a sensible choice when the work centers on binary editing, translation tables, scripts, pointers, or IPS patch handling. Editors who want an integrated visual workflow for graphics or game-specific editing should look at a dedicated editor instead. Its open-source, free-to-use positioning may also suit solo projects that prefer desktop tools over a hosted service.
