ROPgadget is an open-source Python command-line tool for finding instruction gadgets in binaries during ROP exploitation and reverse-engineering work. It is aimed at developers and security researchers who need focused gadget searches, including analysts looking for ROP and JOP gadgets. Its static analysis approach keeps the scope on inspecting binaries and related strings or opcodes rather than offering a broad reverse-engineering environment.

Format and architecture coverage are a practical strength: the tool documents ELF, PE, Mach-O and raw binary inputs, and supports x86, x86-64, ARM, ARM64, PowerPC, SPARC, MIPS and RISC-V. Capstone is used as the disassembly search engine. For raw binaries, users can select architecture, mode and endianness. Search controls include ROP, JOP and SYS; filters can narrow gadgets by instructions, address ranges, regular expressions and bad bytes. String, memory-string and opcode searches and an interactive console extend the same focused workflow.

ROPgadget can generate ROP chains with the --ropchain option, which makes it useful beyond locating candidate instructions. It is an OS-independent Python package, with Windows and Linux listed as platforms, and local installation is part of its documented model. The open-source tool has a free plan and community support. That combination suits solo users and small teams comfortable with a command line and local analysis. Choose it when gadget discovery and chain generation are the priority; look elsewhere if you need a broad reverse-engineering suite, decompiler or firmware-analysis capabilities.

ROPgadget pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Searches ELF, PE, Mach-O and raw binaries across listed architectures
    • Filters gadgets by instructions, address ranges, regexes and bad bytes
    • Supports ROP, JOP and SYS searches plus ROP-chain generation
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on gadget search, not a broad reverse-engineering suite
    • Command-line workflow may not suit buyers seeking a graphical interface
    • Community support rather than a commercial support channel
