Our verdict on RoosterJS

RoosterJS is an open-source, framework-independent JavaScript rich text editor for developers building web editing experiences. It runs inside an HTML div and uses a Content Model between the DOM and editor APIs, converting structured content to HTML for display. The library is suited to applications that need control over editor behavior, structured content, tables, images, formatting, and Microsoft-oriented paste handling rather than a hosted editor service.

Its strongest differentiator is the breadth of content handling around Microsoft formats. Paste support covers Word, Excel, Word Online, OneNote Online, and PowerPoint, while the editor also provides table insertion and editing, image selection and formatting, alt-text APIs, hyperlinks, lists, headings, block quotes, undo, redo, find-and-replace, keyboard shortcuts, and dark-mode utilities. Markdown conversion is available through an extension package. This makes RoosterJS a practical fit for teams that need to preserve and manage varied office-originated content inside a browser-based editor.

RoosterJS is distributed as a library installed through npm or Yarn, with a plugin architecture, built-in plugins, modular content-model packages, and API overrides for customization. That flexibility suits teams with JavaScript or TypeScript development capacity and an existing web application into which the editor can be embedded. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a hosted service, a ready-made collaboration workspace, or a product with application-level operations handled outside their team. Choose RoosterJS when implementation control and Microsoft paste compatibility matter most; consider another editor when collaboration or a managed service is central.
