Our verdict on RomMate
RomMate is an open-source desktop application for managing cartridge ROMs and disc images on Windows and Linux. Its strongest fit is for preservation and retro-gaming workflows that require format conversion, file validation, playlist creation, and filename correction. Rather than acting as a broad game library manager, it concentrates on the technical work around ROM and disc-image files, including CUE, GDI, ISO, and CHD formats.
Disc-image handling is the clearest strength. RomMate converts CUE, GDI, and ISO images to CHD, extracts CHD files back to their original formats, and creates M3U playlists for multi-disc games. It also verifies CHD integrity with chdman and validates CUE/BIN structures and references. These features give users a focused workflow for checking and preparing disc images, while ROM-name validation and fixes address a separate but related organization task.
Validation extends beyond file structure. RomMate checks cartridge ROMs against No-Intro and Redump databases, detects ROM hacks, translations, and external copier headers, and identifies likely filename or checksum matches. That makes it a practical choice for users who prioritize file correctness and standardized naming. The trade-off is its narrower scope: metadata scraping is not included, and it is not positioned as a general manager with broader library features. Choose RomMate for conversion, integrity checks, database validation, and ROM-name work; choose another tool if metadata scraping or wider collection management is central to your workflow.
