Our verdict on RomForge
RomForge is an open-source desktop application for managing ROM collections built around OfflineList-format DAT files. It is aimed at users who need to scan ROM folders, compare files with DAT entries, track collection status, and keep filenames and archive formats aligned across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Native downloads are available through GitHub Releases, and the application supports multiple DAT files for collections organized across more than one database.
Its main strength is the depth of its collection-management workflow. RomForge matches ROMs using CRC32 checksums and displays verified, missing, incorrectly named, archive-type, and untrimmed statuses. It can rename ROMs to DAT-expected filenames, re-archive files between ZIP and 7z, and trim padding from supported GBA and NDS ROMs. Automatic DAT updates from configured URLs help keep collection references current, while cached scans and re-hashing only changed files reduce repeated processing. Persisted game status also keeps progress available between restarts.
RomForge is a strong fit for users whose collections already rely on OfflineList DAT files and who want one tool for verification, naming, archive conversion, trimming, and status tracking. Its focus is narrower than a general ROM library manager: the workflow centers on DAT-based matching, and the product does not include AI features. Choose it when checksum verification and multi-platform desktop support matter more than a broader cataloging scope; consider another tool if your collection is not organized around OfflineList-format DAT files.
