Rodin Platform is an open-source Eclipse IDE for system-level modeling and analysis with Event-B, a formal method. It suits people who need to express system behavior mathematically and check model consistency, including formal-methods users working with UML-like models. The core focus is Event-B, not general-purpose UML diagramming, so teams seeking broad UML coverage may prefer a dedicated UML tool.

Its distinguishing workflow combines refinement across abstraction levels with mathematical proof. Proof obligations help check consistency between levels of a model. Optional UML-B extensions provide class-diagram and state-machine editors, then translate those diagrams into Event-B for verification. That makes UML-B useful when diagram-based modeling needs a formal verification path; it does not turn Rodin into a broad standard-UML suite. The platform also integrates with ProB and supports UML-B plug-ins within its Eclipse environment.

Rodin is free and open source, with desktop support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Optional code-generation plug-ins are documented, but their documentation has older release dates, so compatibility should be checked before making code generation a dependency. Documentation and community channels are the listed support options. Choose Rodin when Event-B refinement and proof are central and UML-like diagrams serve that formal workflow. Choose another tool if the priority is standard UML breadth or code generation that can be relied on without first checking plug-in compatibility.

Rodin Platform pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Mathematical proof checks consistency across model refinement levels.
    • UML-B adds class and state-machine editors that translate to Event-B.
    • Free, open-source desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Models Event-B rather than standard UML, limiting general UML work.
    • UML-B diagram editors depend on an optional extension.
    • Code-generation plug-ins have older documentation; check compatibility first.
