Our verdict on Rivalis

Rivalis is an open-source Node.js framework for browser-based multiplayer games and other real-time applications. Its core model uses rooms and actors to represent multiplayer sessions, with topic-based broadcast and unicast messaging, typed binary communication, and a browser client. WebSocket and WebRTC peer-to-peer transports support real-time connections, while authentication middleware can carry typed actor data. Rivalis is a strong fit for developers who want to operate their own multiplayer server stack and orchestrate rooms across game-server instances.

Its standout area is room and fleet coordination. The Fleet package discovers instances, selects least-loaded placement for rooms, and supports remote room creation and destruction with acknowledged commands. Graceful draining and shutdown help coordinate lifecycle changes. REST and SSE fleet APIs expose orchestration controls, while rate limiting, heartbeats, frame limits, and origin controls cover important connection-management needs. Supported integrations include Node.js, browser environments, Phaser, PixiJS, Three.js, and Babylon.js.

Rivalis follows a self-hosted model with a free, open-source plan. The published deployment model centers on already-running game-server instances: machine provisioning and autoscaling remain the responsibility of platforms such as Kubernetes, Agones, or external autoscalers. That makes Rivalis appropriate for teams that want room management and fleet discovery as part of their application stack, but less suitable for buyers seeking a managed game-server service. Teams that require built-in matchmaking or automatic capacity scaling should choose an alternative or pair Rivalis with separate platform components.
