Our verdict on Riptide Networking

Riptide Networking is a lightweight C# library for multiplayer games, aimed at developers working in Unity and other .NET environments. Its client-server model covers dedicated-server, relay-server, and host-based architectures, and it supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The library provides client and server connection management, message creation and handling, serialization, and configurable transport options. Its free, open-source model makes it a practical fit for small games that need direct control over networking behavior without a paid service tier.

The main strength is transport and messaging flexibility. Built-in UDP and TCP transports are joined by a Steam transport, while reliable, unreliable, and notify message modes let developers choose how messages are handled. Server startup also supports a configurable maximum client count. Unity Package Manager and NuGet installation options suit Unity projects and broader .NET applications, including console applications and other game engines. The low-level design gives developers control over what data is sent and when, but it also places more networking decisions and implementation work with the development team.

Riptide Networking is narrower than a complete multiplayer backend. Its published capabilities center on connection management, serialization, messaging, and transport rather than matchmaking or higher-level game services. True peer-to-peer networking requires source changes, so teams targeting that architecture should account for additional development work. Player capacity is dependent on game data requirements, server hardware, and bandwidth rather than a fixed session limit. Choose Riptide Networking when a small .NET game needs an open-source client-server networking layer with multiple transport choices; consider another option when matchmaking or broader online services are central requirements.
