Our verdict on Retro Music Player
Retro Music Player is a free, open-source Android app for playing music stored locally on a device. Its library views cover songs, albums, artists, playlists, genres, and folders, giving listeners several ways to navigate a collection. Playlist tools include creating, editing, importing, and sorting lists, alongside smart playlists for recently played, most played, and history. It fits Android listeners who want library and playlist controls without an online streaming service; people seeking streaming or music downloads should choose a different type of product.
Library management is a central strength. A built-in tag editor lets users edit song metadata, and lyrics support includes synced and classic lyrics. Playback features include a reorderable queue, gapless playback, a sleep timer, and home-screen widgets. Chromecast and Android Auto support extend playback to compatible parts of the Android ecosystem. The app uses Android MediaStore for local music, while supported file types depend on the device's native media player, so format support is not presented as a single fixed list.
The published product details describe the app as free and released under GPLv3, with availability through Google Play, F-Droid, Obtanium, and GitHub releases. The project lists community support, and the app is limited to Android rather than serving as a cross-platform library. Its built-in equalizer was removed, so listeners who prioritize equalizer controls should look elsewhere. Choose Retro Music Player for local playback, playlist organization, and Android integrations; it is not a fit for streaming, downloads, or desktop listening.
