RestTestGen is an open-source framework for automated black-box, end-to-end testing of REST APIs. It is designed for researchers and technical teams that have a deployed API, an OpenAPI v3 specification, and a need to test behavior without access to source code. The framework interacts with APIs over HTTP and combines specification parsing, parameter generation, response processing, execution oracles, reporting, and coverage measurement in one workflow.

Its strongest fit is advanced testing strategy. RestTestGen supports nominal and error testing, mass-assignment security testing, operation dependency modeling, and parameter mutation operators. The DeepREST strategy applies reinforcement learning to API testing, while NLP-based specification enhancement can extend the information available from an OpenAPI specification. Coverage measurements span paths, operations, status codes, parameters, and parameter values, giving research-oriented teams several ways to assess test exploration. Generated test cases can be output for JUnit and REST-assured.

The framework also fits teams working with developer tooling around Docker, Gradle, IntelliJ IDEA, JUnit, and REST-assured. Its self-hosted model offers control over the testing environment, but it places deployment and execution responsibility on the team rather than presenting a hosted service. RestTestGen is a strong choice for researchers and engineers studying deep REST API testing, dependency-aware exploration, or security-oriented strategies. Teams seeking a simpler scheduling tool, a mock server, contract testing, or testing for GraphQL and SOAP should choose a different product.

RestTestGen pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports nominal, error, security, and reinforcement-learning strategies
    • Measures coverage across paths, operations, parameters, and responses
    • Exports test cases for JUnit and REST-assured
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires an OpenAPI specification and a deployed API
    • Self-hosted deployment requires technical environment management
    • Does not support GraphQL or SOAP APIs
