RESTest review
A specialized REST API test generator for OpenAPI-driven workflows.

RESTest is an open-source Java framework for automated black-box testing of RESTful web APIs. It derives test cases from an OpenAPI Specification without requiring access to the API’s source code, making it suited to developers, testers, and researchers working with local or remotely deployed REST APIs. Its focus is model-driven generation rather than a broad, multi-protocol testing workspace.
The framework’s strongest capability is the range of test-generation approaches it combines. RESTest supports random generation, constraint-based testing for inter-parameter dependencies, and stateful test-data generation using API responses. It can generate REST Assured and Postman test cases, execute workflows through a command-line interface, and produce Allure reports plus CSV and machine-readable test statistics. Input and output coverage reporting adds a way to examine how thoroughly generated cases exercise the API and its responses.
RESTest fits teams that already work with OpenAPI and are comfortable operating a self-hosted Java framework through command-line workflows. It is distributed as LGPL-3.0 open-source software, with no commercial plan structure presented. CI/CD use is supported through documented CircleCI/Maven workflow and command-line execution, while REST Assured, Postman, and Allure provide practical connections to established testing and reporting tools. Choose RESTest when research-oriented, model-based REST generation is the priority. Choose another tool when GraphQL or SOAP coverage, a hosted platform, scheduling, mocks, or contract testing is central to the evaluation.
