Our verdict on Reminiscence
Reminiscence is an open-source, self-hosted bookmark and web archive manager for people and teams that want to run their own reading library on a server. It combines bookmark organization with archival storage: users can save links, edit titles, tags, and summaries, categorize items into directories, and preserve pages as HTML, PDF, or full-page PNG files. It can also archive non-HTML files such as PDFs, images, and text files, making it broader than a link-only bookmark collection.
Its strongest area is reading and archival depth. Automatic tagging and HTML-content summarization help organize saved material, while reader mode provides a cleaner way to revisit pages. Annotations and saved reading position work with HTML, PDF, and EPUB files, supporting longer-form reading rather than simple retrieval. Search covers URLs, titles, tags, and summaries. Multiple accounts, public directories, and group directories extend the product from personal storage to shared collections, while the REST API supports adding URLs and listing bookmarks.
The trade-off is a self-hosted workflow with a narrower access ecosystem. Reminiscence runs on the web and can be self-hosted, but it has no official browser addon and no mobile apps. Its search is based on URL, title, tags, and summary rather than full-text search. That makes it a strong choice for users who value ownership, file archiving, annotations, and structured reading libraries, especially when HTML, PDF, PNG, and other saved files belong in one place. Users who prioritize quick capture from a browser, mobile access, or full-text discovery should choose a different bookmark manager.
